Learn About the Alaska Native Culture and the Kodiak Alutiiq Civilization
The Kodiak Alutiiq civilization dates back more than 7,000 years ago, when adventurous people paddled over from the Alaskan mainland. The Alutiiq were a skilled mariners and a coastal people that subsisted primarily on salmon, halibut, and whale.
The entire area around Larsen Bay is filled with evidence of ancient settlements and thousands of artifacts have been discovered in the area dating back over 7,000 years.
Larsen Bay is named after Peter Larsen who was an Unga fur trader and hunter. the area made national news back in 1991 when the Smithsonian conducted the largest repatriation of Native remains ever. The remains of 756 Alutiiq people originally excavated in the 1930's were returned.
