Whale Watching from the Deck of the Lodge as Massive Whales Cruise by Uyak Bay is an Unforgettable Experience

Kodiak has some of the most diverse varieties of sea life found in the world. Guests relaxing on the balcony or in the beach Hot tub/Jacuzzi can often observe whales surfacing and spouting across the waters of Uyak Bay in front of the lodge.

Our whale viewing programs are generally done either by boat or kayak. Our guides will custom-design programs based on the best viewing options during your stay.

Baleen whales found in our waters include: Fin whales, Humpback whales, Sei whales, Minke Whales and Gray Whales.  In addition, killer whales are often seen hunting in the waters directly in front of the lodge.

When saltwater fishing in Uyak Bay, our guests frequently become tired from catching so many fish.  Many of them take a break to check out whales up close. It's not uncommon for fin whales, humpbacks and Dall's porpoises to come within 40 feet of the boat.

Whales frequently cruise by and breach, creating up-close memories for our guests that most people only experience when watching Pacific Life commercials.

Why do whales breach?

Baleen whales can grow to over 200 tons in mass and over 100 feet in length.  Despite their massive size, they are able to leap completely out of the water.

Why whales breach is widely debated.  Among the theories are: males showing off for females, dislodging parasites and stunning or killing nearby fish or krill...

Our theory is that they breach purely for entertainment, playfulness and to show us a spectacular display of natural beauty and power.   We invite you to join us on a whale view to see nature and its awesomeness.

“Yesterday, I went out into Uyak Bay whale watching. Oh gracious! There were whales all around me, blowing and surfacing in every direction. We saw Humpbacks, Fintails and Orcas -- majestic creatures, as large as 50 feet long! As they dove, their monsterous tails glided above the water and it takes your breath away.”
